The LC8 is an old design that has had most of its issues worked out. Very few reliability issues (unless you get a Friday / Monday bike ) Both would be fine for long highway trips and offroading. The 1290 better for the former and the 890 better for the latter. Since then it has been all KTMs. 690 to 500 to 1290 SAR to 790r. All have been great and even the 1290 SAR was better off road than the KLR. The 790 is still a heavy bike but carries the weight low and has good suspension so feels way way lighter than it is off road. It is THE best all around adventure bike available. .
